Haverhill and District Operatic Society
Established 1968

Centre Stage Company (the performing arm of Haverhill and District Operatic Society - or HADOS) has been putting on shows since 1969 in Haverhill, Suffolk, UK. A registered Charity, we are a dramatics group, who take a professional approach to our productions.

Haverhill and District Operatic Society was founded by Barrie Stevenson in 1968. The first production, Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado was performed at Castle Manor Upper School in February of 1969, having been in rehearsal for a year. The roots of The Society were built on Barrie's attention to detail and stage craft. This is a tradition that the company continue to adhere to, to this day.

In 1981 The Society performed two shows in a year for the first time. As the venue for the productions was still Castle Manor School, dates were limited to the October and February half term holidays. In 1995, the Haverhill Town Hall Arts Centre opened after an £800,000 refurbishment. The Society's first performance was the excellent wartime review, Happy as a Sandbag, aimed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of VE Day. The committee (see below) made the decision that it wanted to be the resident group at the Arts Centre, performing plays and musicals throughout the year.

In collaboration with St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Centre Stage Company was formed in 1998, where the society agreed to perform up to five productions a year. This partnership was dissolved in 2000, but The Society decided to continue to promote the Arts in Haverhill, performing one Pantomime, two musicals and two plays each year, a major increase from the one show per year of 37 years ago. This has been tough for The Society, but Centre Stage Company is recognised as the premier group in the town. In 2006 the September play was dropped from the portfolio, and in 2010 the committee decided to move to a January Pantomime, an April play and an October Musical, together with the commitment to the July Last Night Of The Proms and Christmas Carols For All at the Old Independent Church.

With the transfer of the running of the Arts Centre to the Haverhill Town Council, Centre Stage Company looks forward to continuing to help promote the Arts within the Haverhill area, a local company at a superb local Arts Centre.

In 2004 we aqquired a warehouse unit on Holland's Road in Haverhill, where we store and construct our sets, and store our props and costumes.

Everyone in the company is a volunteer, from Set Designers, to Directors, from Actors, to Stage Crew, from make up, to costume. We always welcome new members, and always welcome any time people are willing to give us. Why not come along and join us? It's a great way to have fun!

Our Grateful Thanks To

The management and staff of Haverhill Town Hall Arts Centre
The caretaker and staff of Samuel Ward Art & Technology College

The committee also wishes to thank any individuals, shopkeepers, traders and Society members who have assisted with the production in any way.

We are also a member of NODA.
